Music Recommendations

Page Coming Soon! For now, you can just check out some of my music projects:

OSP: My pandemic-inspired instrumental music project :)

Maxwell Mandell: My main music project. Mostly just for fun, I have a goal of releasing a mini-album each year (roughly). Also enjoy making my own music videos.

Note: You can find all of these projects on all major streaming platforms too!

Story-Based Music

This is music I've run across over the years. They are more commonly known as concept albums, but most of the ones I enjoy span multiple albums. This ranges from sci-fi (think Star Wars-ish) to historical fiction. These stories might not suit every family's style - so I recommend looking into the stories further if you want to share them with your kids.

The Metropolis Suites

By Janelle Monae

STORY SYNOPSIS: Spanning across three albums and five suites, the series follows Mayweather as she does what no android is allowed to do: fall in love with a human. From here, Monae utilizes the Metropolis to tell a story of rebellion and the fight for liberation.
RUNTIME: 2h 42m

MUSIC SIMILAR TO: St.Vincent, Aaliyah, Janet Jackson
FAV PIANO SONGS: N/A
BEST REPRESENTATIVE SONGS: Faster, Tightrope, Dance Apocalyptic, Look Into My Eyes
ALBUM ORDER: The Chase Suite, The ArchAndroid, The Electric Lady
MATURITY RATING, OTHER COMMENTS: Overall Story: PG-13, Individual Songs: PG-13. Really good music! I love the integration of actual storytelling elements, like prose-style music. Really creative story, too.

DEMA

By Twenty One Pilots

STORY SYNOPSIS: Across seven albums, Twenty One Pilots invite listeners into Dema—a city watched over by a group of leaders called the bishops. At the heart of it all is Clancy, who begins to question their rules and search for a life beyond the walls. The band uses lyrics, artwork, and hidden clues to tell a story about courage, creativity, and holding onto hope when the odds feel stacked against you. It’s a puzzle and an adventure rolled into one, with plenty for fans of all ages to discover.

BEST REPRESENTATIVE SONGS: Jumpsuit, Chlorine, Shy Away, The Outside, Paladin Strait
ALBUM ORDER: BLURRYFACE, (Twenty One Pilots, Vessel), Trench, Scaled and Icy, Clancy, Breach
MATURITY RATING, OTHER COMMENTS: Overall Story: PG-13, though the music remains approachable for younger listeners. The bishops add a layer of mystery and challenge, but the heart of the Dema saga is about resilience, friendship, and finding freedom together.

The Color Spectrum

By The Dear Hunter

STORY SYNOPSIS: The Color Spectrum is a collection of nine EPs, each of which is named after a different color and explores different musical styles and themes. The EPs are meant to represent different emotional and psychological states, and are loosely connected to the story of The Dear Hunter. The EPs range from dark and brooding to upbeat and optimistic, and feature a variety of musical styles, including rock, pop, and electronic music. While there is no overarching narrative to The Color Spectrum, the EPs are meant to be listened to in order and are designed to take the listener on an emotional journey.
RUNTIME: 2h 24m
MUSIC SIMILAR TO: Thank You Scientist, Closure in Moscow, Coheed and Cambria, The Receiving End Of Sirens
FAV PIANO SONGS: Crow and Cackle, What Time Taught Us, Mr.Malum
BEST REPRESENTATIVE SONGS: I Couldn’t Do It Alone, Echo, She’s Always Singing, The Canopy [I LOVE THIS SONG]
ALBUM ORDER: Black, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet, White
MATURITY RATING, OTHER COMMENTS: Overall Story: G, Individual Songs: G (except “Never Forgive, Never Forget” - has one curse word in it.) Really awesome concept by a great group. There’s no linear story that goes along with it, so you can shuffle this one (though I don’t recommend it since it is put in a specific order for a reason.)
